Comprehensive Eye Exam Q & A

How often should I have an eye exam?

Dr. Turner recommends you have a comprehensive eye exam yearly. Getting your eyes checked every year not only helps her keep on top of how well you can see, but it also allows her to check for the presence of eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and corneal diseases.

What can I expect during a comprehensive eye exam?

First, Dr. Turner will take a comprehensive inventory of your medical history and health concerns. Once you’re in the examination chair, Dr. Turner will perform a number of tests to assess your eye health, such as:

Tonometer test

This test allows Dr. Turner to gauge the internal pressure of your eye and assess your risk for glaucoma.

Autorefractor test

This test measures the curvature of your cornea. If you have visual impairments, Dr. Turner will use the information gathered from this test to determine the lens prescription.

Visual fields test

This test measures your central and peripheral vision. It’s very useful when managing glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Retinal photography

As an option to dilation, Dr. Turner offers retinal photography with Optomap®, which is an advanced optometry tool she uses to create an image of your eyes. She also finds the Optomap image beneficial when comparing eye health from year to year.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT)

If you have macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or glaucoma, Dr. Turner may recommend OCT testing. This noninvasive test uses light waves to take a digital cross-section image of your retina.

Dr. Turner will also examine your eyes using a phoropter and slit lamp to test vision and eye health.

What if I need glasses?

If Dr. Turner determines you need glasses, she will send you to their in-house optical department so the experienced opticians can help you find a pair of glasses from their wide range of designer frames and lenses.

For contact lenses, Dr. Turner and her staff offer one-on-one training so you can successfully put in and take out your contacts before you leave the office.
